(EAST CHICAGO) - A long-closed hotel and boardinghouse was the first structure demolished Monday in East Chicago’s historic Marktown neighborhood.
BP bought 10 vacant properties near the company's massive Whiting Refinery property so it can create more green space and possibly a parking lot.
But residents of Marktown aren't happy with the purchase and are protesting the demolition.
Marktown is unusual in that people walk in the narrow streets and park vehicles on the sidewalks, and it's on the National Register of Historic Places.
