(BOONVILLE) - Boone County Sheriff Ken Campbell is stepping down amid misconduct allegations.
The Sheriff's Department says Campbell has been the target of a joint investigation by the Boone County-Hamilton County Drug Task Force and the FBI. The investigation centers around alleged misconduct by Campbell over the last three to four years with an alleged prostitute.
Campbell announced he is preparing the paperwork for his retirement following the allegations. In a statement released Thursday night, Campbell said while he believes he has done nothing illegal, he is apologizing for what he calls serious errors of judgment in his personal life.
Chief Deputy Major Mike Nielsen will take over as acting sheriff.
In a separate statement, Nielsen says he learned of the allegations a few days prior to the announcement and asked Campbell to resign after gathering the facts and speaking with the county attorney.
It's not yet known if Campbell will face any criminal charges.
