Car Carrying 4 Sinks Into Sink Hole

Last updated on Monday, June 2, 2014

(EVANSVILLE) - An Evansville motorist and his three passengers escaped without injury when a gaping sinkhole opened up beneath their car along a city street and began swallowing the vehicle.

Timothy Stone tells the Evansville Courier & Press he, his girlfriend and two children had just stopped at a stop sign Friday afternoon when their car "felt weird" and started to sink.

All four of them managed to climb to safety from the car's passenger side before its front end sank into the hole.

Two wreckers eventually pulled the car from the sinkhole, which a police report described as 12 feet in diameter and 16 feet deep.

Evansville Water & Sewer Utility Director Allen Mounts says a water main and a sewer line had failed in the area.
