(GARY) - The Gary Community School board voted Tuesday to close Lew Wallace STEM Academy and five other schools in a budget-cutting move.
Board members voted 4-to-2 to approve the closings to help close a $27.5-million dollar deficit brought about by overspending, property tax caps and a low property tax collection rate.
Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt says a transition committee is already in the works, and will include representatives from the schools, teachers' union, and the community.
