IU Health May Merge Two Indy Hospitals

Last updated on Tuesday, June 24, 2014

(UNDATED) - Indiana University and Methodist Hospitals are considering merging their Indianapolis campus facilities.

Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Curtwright says a team of 18 doctors and five administrators is currently reviewing what a University Hospital and Methodist campus merger might look like. He says hospital corporations nationwide are continuing to see drops in in-patient, hospital services.

He says they're trying to determine how much more hospital capacity they'll need in the future.

Curtwright says the campus merger will likely result in staff streamlining. He says they anticipate that there will be "one adult academic health center based here in the downtown area of Indianapolis."

Curtwright says prevention and outpatient service models continue to be less expensive. He says the trend is ultimately a positive step forward for medicine. He says it'll take several months for the team to reach a final decision on campus merger details.
