Norfolk Southern Train Catches On Fire

(NEW HAVEN) - A Norfolk Southern train engine caught fire on the tracks in New Haven early Monday morning.

Shortly before 3:30 a.m., firefighters were called to the railroad tracks near Green Street.

New Haven Adams Township Fire Department Chief John Bennett said when crews arrived flames were coming from the second engine on a westbound train.

Bennett was not sure if the train was already stopped when the fire started. Crews quickly extinguished the flames on the engine.

Bennett said early indications pointed to an electrical malfunction as the cause of the fire, but cautioned crews would still need to investigate.

There was concern the fire would spread into nearby fuel tanks. Bennett said the train was carrying approximately 2,000 pounds of fuel.

No injuries were reported.
