(ELWOOD) - An Indiana family finally received closure when Airman Howard Martin returned home 62 years after he was killed in a plane crash during the Korean War.
Martin's six brothers and sisters were waiting on the tarmac at the Indianapolis International Airport as his flag-draped casket returned back home Thursday to Indiana soil.
The 21-year-old was flying on a C-124 transport plane on November 22, 1952 when it slammed into a mountain 50 miles east of Anchorage, Alaska. 52 airmen were killed.
The Indiana Patriot Guard stood at attention with flags as the hearse made its way back to Elwood. Members of community lined the street to pay their respects.
The mayor of Elwood recognized Martin's contribution and proclaimed the day Third Class Airman Howard Martin Remembrance Day and presented a plaque to his family.
Martin will be buried Saturday at the Elwood City Cemetery.
