(GARY) - The city of Gary is stepping up crime prevention efforts. Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson announced the appointment of a new police chief-Larry McKinley, a 15-year veteran of the force.
The Chief has already begun his first assignment which is to submit a plan to the Mayor that addresses officer compensation and getting more officers on the street.
The city has experienced a series of what the mayor called "heinous crimes," including the July 6th shooting death of on-duty Patrolman Jeff Westerfield.
