Holiday World Unveils First Steel Roller Coaster

Last updated on Friday, July 25, 2014

(SANTA CLAUS) - A record-breaking roller coaster is coming to Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari next spring.

It's called the Thunderbird and when it's completed, it will be the nation's first launched wing coaster.

Unlike traditional coasters which are led up a lift hill by a chain, the Thunderbird will be launched by electromagnetic technology from 0-60 miles per hour in under three-and-a-half seconds. The Thunderbird will also have the tallest loop of any wing coaster in the world at 125 feet.

The 22-million dollar coaster is already under construction in the park's Thanksgiving section. It is being built by Bollinger & Mabillard whom Holiday World President Matt Eckert calls the "Cadillac of roller coasters."

"We've dreamed of adding a B&M steel coaster for many years and are excited that Thunderbird will be B&M's first launched coaster," Eckert says.

The Thunderbird will be open to the public when the park opens on the last weekend of April next year.
