(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis police officer was killed in a shootout with a man armed with an assault weapon.
Officer Perry Renn, a 22-year veteran of the force died after being rushed to hospital on Saturday.
Authorties say Renn and another officer encountered 25-year-old Major Davis Jr. in an alley. At that point, gunfire erupted.
Davis was listed in critical condition.
The community is coming together to remember fallen Indianapolis Police Officer Perry Renn.
Many people stopped by IMPD's north district headquarters on Sunday to pay their respects as Renn's squad car sat outside the building, draped with a black cloth and covered in flowers and personal notes. Renn leaves behind a wife and father.
The Marion County Public Safety Director calls the shooting death of officer Perry Renn ---"an attack on the city of Indianapolis".
Troy Riggs says the Renn's shooting marks the 8th time an officer has been shot in a year and a half. Two of those officers have died.
He believes 22 others had shots fired upon them--and yet each night--he says they put on a uniform and report for work.
Governor Orders Flags At Half Staff
Governor Pence has ordered flags lowered to remember two Indiana police officers killed in the line of duty.
The deaths of Indianapolis Metro Police Officer Perry Renn and Gary Metropolitan Police Officer Jeffrey Brady Westerfield follow last week's death of Tipton County Deputy Sheriff Jacob Calvin, whose funeral will be held today.
