(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indiana state senator will be deployed to Afghanistan later this year.
State Sen. Jim Banks, R-Columbia City, will report for active duty on Sept. 5 and deploy in the fall. He's expected to return in May 2015.
The deployment is part of his service as a supply corps officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, where he's served since 2012 and holds the rank of lieutenant junior grade.
He's running for re-election in November. If he wins the race, he'll take the oath of office in Afghanistan via Skype; the oath would be administered by a justice of the Indiana Supreme Court. Banks would then submit a formal leave of absence and would get his Senate seat back when he returns.
