(GARY) - The city of Gary’s version of the annual National Night Out last night was a lot like other cities… but still different.
It was dedicated to the memory of fallen Patrolman Jeffery Westerfield, who was killed while on duty on July 6th, which was his 47th birthday.
His eldest daughter, Allie, thanked everyone for coming out for an event that she said she wasn't even aware of until a couple weeks ago. She also thanked everyone on behalf of her family for the support they've given since her father's death.
Police Chief Larry McKinley says National Night Out is a way for residents to eat, play games, enjoy music and movies in the park and get important information about the police department.
