(PUTNAM CO.) - A good Samaritan was fatally struck on Interstate-70 while helping a driver who ran out of gas near Putnam County, Indiana State Police said.
The crash was reported just before 11 p.m. Monday night on I-70 West near mile marker 32 when Erica Driedger, of Texas, pulled her SUV on the emergency shoulder after running out of gas. Her husband, Johnny Dreidger, walked to a nearby house for help and when he returned, the SUV's battery had died.
Another driver, 22-year-old John Dugger of Terre Haute, stopped to help the couple. While he got out of his car to give the SUV a jump, Dugger was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
Dugger was flown via medical helicopter to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he later died.
The driver of the oncoming vehicle, Terry Scarbrough, of Farmersburg, was not injured.
ISP did not suspect alcohol or drugs to be involved in the crash and no charges were filed.
