Hunger Levels Rising Throughout State

Last updated on Monday, August 18, 2014

(STATEWIDE) - Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana and Feeding America say the hunger issue has hit the crises level in Indiana.

More than 260,000 Hoosiers including 97,000 children in Central and Southeastern Indiana receive emergency food each year through Gleaners. That's according to their joint report released today.

Hunger in America 2014 is the most comprehensive study of how charities are responding to the hunger issue. The report says that more than one million Hoosiers are at risk for hunger and one in eight rely on Gleaners.

Gleaners CEO Cindy Hubert says that more than one third of their clients must choose between food and other necessities like rent, utilities and medical care every month.
