(NEW YORK) - As part of Nickelodeon’s ongoing commitment to encourage young people to take positive action in their communities, the network announced Tim Balz of Mooresville, Ind., as its August HALO Effect award recipient.
Selected for his dedication to providing physically challenged people with free, rebuilt electric wheelchairs, Balz will be featured in a short on-air profile airing on TeenNick and highlighted on TeenNick.com throughout the month. In addition, HALO Effect will award a $5,000 grant to Freedom Chairs, a charity chosen by Balz.
HALO Effect is a year-round initiative that recognizes one deserving teen every month for their work to help and lead others (HALO) in their community. The initiative was first announced by Nick Cannon, creator, host and executive producer of the annual TeenNick HALO Awards, during the live broadcast in November 2013. This month marks the eighth HALO Effect award that Nickelodeon has distributed.
A 19-year-old high school senior, Balz was a sophomore and member of his high school's robotics team when he was inspired to help a wheelchair-bound schoolmate who was struggling with his manual wheelchair. Soon after, he founded Freedom Chairs of Indiana, a charity that repairs and rebuilds wheelchairs for physically challenged people, free of charge.
Since 2011, Balz and his team of volunteers have worked almost every weekend to fix donated wheelchairs that come into their workshop. To date, Freedom Chairs has repaired and given away more than 85 electric wheelchairs and medical equipment to people in need.
