(EVANSVILLE) - The Evansville Police Department says a man is arrested after an attempted robbery early Tuesday morning.
Police says 50-year-old James Worthington is facing multiple charges after he attempted to rob a customer at a west side gas station.
The victim told investigators he was at the Marathon at 7 N. Fulton around 5:30. He said he was standing outside of his vehicle at a gas pump when Worthington came up to him on a bike and demanded money.
When the victim replied that he did not have any, he told investigators Worthington pointed a black handgun at him and said "Don't make me go through your pockets".
The victim told Worthington that he had a $20 bill in his truck and leaned in to get it. What Worthington did not know, was the victim was actually retrieving a club from his truck.
The victim came out swinging.
Police say Worthington then fled the scene on his bicycle.
Police say he was spotted near Franklin and 3rd. They say he tried to flee, but was caught a short distance away.
EPD says officers saw him toss a handgun while he was fleeing. The gun was recovered and determined to be a BB gun.
After being treated at the hospital for the injuries he received during the attempted robbery, Worthington was arrested and taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail on charges of attempted robbery with a firearm, pointing a handgun, and resisting law enforcement.
The victim was not injured.
