(FORT WAYNE) - Hundreds of men and a dozen aircraft from Fort Wayne’s 122nd Fighter Wing of the Indiana Air National Guard are slated for deployment.
Col. Patrick Renwick, the Fighter Wing Commander, announced Wednesday 300 airmen, including pilots, mechanics and support staff, are heading overseas next month. It has yet to be announced to where they will be deployed.
Renwick confirmed the six-month mission is under the direction of the Central Command. Geographically, that stretches from the Middle East to the Southeast Asia.
Renwick says this mission is not a response to ISIS. He says it is a mission they've been planning for months, well ahead of the recent developments with ISIS in the Middle East.
12 A-10 fighters will be assigned to the yet to be announced location.
The A-10 is used extensively in support of ground troops and targeted ground air-attacks.
