(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana casino owners say they need to find ways to become more competitive after losing more than $110 million in revenue to increased competition from neighboring states.
They're hoping Republican Rep. Tom Dermody of LaPorte will help. Dermody was named chairman of the House Public Policy Committee in 2013 and has been visiting casinos around the state to assess the situation.
Conservative lawmakers and Gov. Mike Pence have long balked at an expansion of gambling. But Centaur Gaming vice president John Keeler tells the Indianapolis Business Journal Dermody may be more open-minded.
Dermody says any decision lawmakers make needs to make sense for the entire state. But he says he hopes to overcome the in-state turf battles that have bogged down discussions of gambling changes in the past.
