(UNDATED ) - An Indiana infectious disease expert says a worldwide “call to action” has the potential to stop the spreading Ebola virus.
Dr. Christopher Belcher is medical director of infectious diseases at Peyton Manning Children's Hospital at St.Vincent. Belcher says it's possible to get Ebola under control. He says there's no cure or real treatment, but proper precautions and prevention can stem the tide of growth.
Dr. Belcher says experimental medications may aid in recovery, but they haven't exhausted human studies and clinical trials yet.
The World Health Organization is warning that if the Ebola outbreak in West Africa isn't brought under control soon, the world could see 1.4 million cases by mid-January. The report says thousands of cases are occurring each week with 70% of patients dying from the virus.
Dr. Belcher says good hygiene and containment of bodily secretions have proven important in controlling SARS, MERS, influenza and the common cold. He says research will continue, but education remains extremely important.
