(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis man accused of stealing human brain tissue and selling it on eBay appeared in court Wednesday morning.
David Charles was arrested in December 2013 after he tried to sell a duffel bag of human tissue to an undercover officer in a Dairy Queen parking lot, police said.
Charles had previously sold six jars of tissue to an eBay buyer in San Diego, Calif., who then called officials, police said.
The tissue was stolen from Indiana Medical History Museum, and was from patients who once lived at the old Central State Hospital. The facility was conceived 168 years ago as a psychiatric treatment center .
Police later discovered that in addition to taking the jars of tissue, Charles took other artifacts including antique surgical instruments, a casket, a skeleton and an operating table.
Charles faces two counts of burglary and a theft charge in the case.
Charles is set for another pre-trial appearance Jan. 7, with a trial date of Jan. 12.
