(INDIANAPOLIS) - Firefighters rescued a man who fell into an elevator shaft in an abandoned building on the near east side.
The 62-year-old man was discovered by two teenagers who happened to be walking by the old RCA Plant at 3324 E. Michigan and heard the man yelling for help.
Crews were called to the scene about 10:45 p.m. Saturday. It is unclear how long the man had been in the elevator shaft.
The 16-year-old boys, both students at Herron High School, heard what they thought was a moaning sound coming from the building. After placing a call to 911 the boys entered the structure and located the man in the shaft between the 3rd and 4th floor. He had fallen and landed on the top of the elevator.
The Indianapolis Fire Department Tactical Team used dual low angle rope lowering systems to send rescuers into the shaft. The lowering systems allowed the rescuers to make contact with the patient while not putting additional pressure on the elevator. The two rescuers secured the conscious and alert man to a backboard and crews raised him to floor level.
He was then transported to IU Methodist Hospital in good condition.
