(INDIANAPOLIS) - An alert neighbor is credited with saving a man in his 50’s from a south side house fire Sunday morning.
Indianapolis firefighters were dispatched to the 2200 block of St. Peter Street near Raymond Street and Keystone Avenue just before 6 a.m. on the report of a house fire. They arrived and found smoke and flames showing from the residence. It took fire crews about 20 minutes to get the fire under control.
Before firefighters arrived the neighbor, Rick Benedict, was up making coffee when he heard the man next door screaming his name.
Benedict ran outside and found the house on fire. The man was still inside and was just below a small widow at the front of the home.
Benedict says the man had his hand extended out of the window and he pulled over a plastic bench from his yard to get better leverage. Several attempts later and at risk of being overcome by smoke himself, Benedict was able to pull the man through the small window to safety.
The man was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in good condition to be checked out.
The homeowner told firefighters that he woke to heavy fire in the home and had no idea how it started. Damage to the residence is estimated to be $105,000.
