(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana may not have a permanent state treasurer until January.
When Richard Mourdock abruptly resigned last month, Governor Pence announced within minutes the appointment of Indiana Finance Authority COO Daniel Huge on an interim basis.
Pence says it was important to get someone into the job quickly to ensure continuity. But Pence says he's still discussing with advisers whether to name a permanent replacement for the three-and-a-half months remaining in Mourdock's term, since voters will soon make their own decision on Mourdock's successor.
The obvious choice for the Republican governor might be to give the post to Kelly Mitchell, the GOP nominee for the job against Democrat Michael Boland and Libertarian Mike Jasper. But Mitchell has asked Pence not to appoint her. She says she needs to focus on introducing herself to voters to win a full four-year term.
