(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana attorney general’s office estimates about 460,000 state residents could be eligible for refunds from AT&T under the national settlement of a lawsuit over unfair cell phone charges.
Indiana and joined the 49 other states, the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission in reaching the $105 million deal with the company.
Officials say AT&T billed millions of customers for charges from third-party companies for services customers never asked to receive or were duped into subscribing to - things like horoscope texts or flirting tips. The fees were usually around $9.99 a month and not easy for customers to find on their bills.
AT&T says it discontinued third-party billing last year for such premium short messaging services.
