(COLUMBUS) - A 7-year-old boy is dead after a car hit the motor scooter that he and his father were riding.
Columbus police said that just before 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, the boy, Skyler Bruner, was riding the scooter with his dad, Darrell W. Bruner, on U.S. Highway 31 near Shady Lane in Columbus, when they were hit.
The driver of the other vehicle told investigators he was headed south down U.S. 31 and did not see the scooter before he hit it.
A witness told investigators the scooter had dimly light rear lights that were difficult to see.
Skyler was airlifted to Riley Hospital for Children, but he died of his injuries from the crash just before midnight.
The child's father, 29-year-old Darrell Bruner was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital with a head injury and was later taken to IU-Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and is in intensive care. He is in critical condition.
Police said counselors are being made available for students and staff where Skyler attended school in the Bartholomew County Consolidated School Corporation.
