(INDIANAPOLIS) - A highly-contagious, often fatal feline virus has been discovered in a number of cats recently brought to Indianapolis Animal Care and Control, officials with the agency said Friday.
IACC officials said the cats have feline panleukopenia virus, which is similar to parvovirus found in dogs.
There currently is no real treatment for the virus, according to IACC.
The virus spread quickly to other cats in the shelter before IACC workers knew any of the cats had panleukopenia. It was easily spread because the cats are kept in close quarters.
IACC is working to decontaminate the room and asked the public not to bring any owner-surrendered cats to the shelter for the next two weeks.
