Jockey Dies Following Shelbyville Race Injury

Last updated on Wednesday, October 15, 2014

(SHELBYVILLE) - A jockey has died from his injuries after being thrown from his horse during a race Tuesday night at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino in Shelbyville.

A casino spokesperson says during the eighth race of the evening, apprentice rider 17-year-old Juan Saez was thrown after his horse, Montezuma Express, clipped heels with the horse in front of him and fell.

Saez was airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in critical condition and was pronounced dead shortly before 11:00.

Shortly after that incident, a horse named Platitude also fell causing his jockey, Marcelino Pedroza to be thrown. Pedroza was not taken to the hospital.

Both Montezuma Express and Platitude were euthanized Tuesday night following the incidents.

Officials do not believe the incidents are related but both are under review by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission's Board of Stewards. More details will be released once that review is complete.
