(VIGO CO.) - The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal two vehicle crash on US Highway 40 just east of State Road 340 in eastern Vigo County that involved a stolen van and fake ID’s.
It happened about 12:45 p.m. Saturday when a tan Dodge Caravan was traveling westbound and crossed the center line, striking an eastbound red Ford Mustang.
When emergency crews got to the accident, they discovered the driver and passenger of the Caravan had fled the scene.
It was also later discovered that the Caravan had been reported stolen from Clark County, IL.
Fire crews extricated the occupants of the Mustang. The driver, Yesli Perez-Lopez, 25, was airlifted from the scene to Methodist Hospital. The passenger, Fernanda Martinez, Brazil, Ind., was transported to Union Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Initially investigators could not identify the occupants of the Mustang because of conflicting identification found on both the driver and passenger. Deputies found several drivers' license and other identification that had different names but the same photo.
The van driver who fled from the scene was found about a half hour after the crash. John Fasig, 44, Martinsville, Ill., was found about a mile away from the accident scene.
Fasig was taken into custody and transported to Union Hospital by ambulance for injuries from the crash. He was later airlifted to Methodist Hospital with spine and neck injuries.
Investigators say Fasig tested positive for drugs. He faces several charges.
For more than six hours Deputies and the Sheriff's K-9's searched for the female that fled form the scene. Dawn LaFountain, 48, was eventually found and also faces several charges.
US Highway 40 in both directions was closed for nearly five hours
