(CUMBERLAND) - Two people are being treated for critical injuries from an apartment fire in Cumberland.
A 20-year-old man and a teenage boy suffered severe burns in what's being described as an explosion and fire.
Indianapolis Fire Department crews responded to the scene at the Berkshire Square Apartments. Heavy fire and smoke was pouring from the building when crews arrived.
The apartments are located on Colony Wood Drive just north of Washington Street. The fire destroyed at least two apartment units. The building houses eight units total, and 20 residents have been displaced as a result of the fire.
A neighbor saw the victims run out of the building after the explosion and described a horrific sight, with the teenager showing significant burns. Both of the victims are being treated at Eskenazi Health.
The occupants of the apartment had been smelling a natural gas odor for a number of days, and had reported it. But on Wednesday, they wanted to use the stove. When they turned it on, there was an explosion.
Citizens Energy has turned off the gas as fire investigators look into the cause of the fire.
