Cold Weather Plays Role In Flu Outbreaks

Last updated on Monday, November 17, 2014

(UNDATED) - Indiana State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. Jerome Adams says frigid weather can play a role in spreading the flu.

Dr. Adams says it's not the cold temperatures, but the fact that cold weather forces many people indoors where they have a greater chance of being exposed to the virus from those who have it.

Dr. Adams says it's still not too late for people to get flu shots. He says 50,000 Americans - including about 100 kids - will die from influenza this year. He says the flu is far more dangerous that Ebola which is getting far more attention these days and has only resulted in one American death thus far.

Dr. Adams says it's probably better to get the four-strain version of the flu vaccine, but the three-strain version is fine as well. He says pneumonia shots are also recommended for people over the age of 65 and those with compromised immune systems or those who may have chronic conditions like diabetes.
