(INDIANAPOLIS) - An off-duty Indiana State Trooper in Wayne County saved a home from going up in flames on Saturday.
Pendleton Trooper Tyler Painter was driving his pickup truck with his two sons inside Saturday afternoon when he passed a house in the town of Milton.
Painter said he saw flames and smoke coming from the house out of the corner of his eye.
He told the boys to stay in the truck, jumped out and got the residents out of the house and then put the fire out.
Painter said the siding had caught fire after the residents had dumped some ashes from a wood stove outside the day before.
"It was at the point where it was gonna go up blazing or, you know, get put out right then," Painter said. "I figured I'd try out the Wolverine fire-resistant boots. You know, worst case scenario, there was a small pile of snow there I could have put my foot in. But it worked out. If the fire engine hadn't got there with the proper equipment, I'm sure the house would have gone up in flames again."
Painter is a seven-year veteran of the Indiana State Police. He said this is the first time in his career that he's put out a house fire.
