(TERRE HAUTE) - A Terre Haute man is behind bars after the death of a 10-week-old boy.
WTHI reports that on Friday evening just before 9:00, staff at a local emergency room notified Terre Haute Police of injuries to 10-week-old David L. Hires.
Hospital staff told police the child's injuries indicated that some type of head trauma caused bleeding to the brain, and a possible skull fracture.
Police learned that the child was left with the boyfriend of the maternal grandmother for about 10 minutes at 1534 Woodley Avenue, while the mother and grandmother went to a nearby gas station.
Police identified the boyfriend as 38-year-old Anthony A. Wilson.
Officials say Wilson was holding the child, who was gasping for air when the mother and grandmother returned from the gas station.
The baby was transported to Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, where the 10-week-old died the following morning.
After an autopsy, and further investigation, police arrested Wilson, charging him with murder and neglect of a dependent resulting in a death.
Wilson is being held in the Vigo County Jail.
