(WHITLEY CO.) - Investigators from the Indiana State Police post in Fort Wayne are investigating the death of a 48-year-old male inmate of the Whitley County Jail after he was found unconscious and unresponsive in his cell Tuesday night.
A preliminary investigation by Detective Andrew Mills indicates that around 2 p.m. Tuesday, 48-year-old Kevin J. Minnix of Columbia City was brought into the Whitley County Jail by a deputy and was placed into a holding cell.
Mills said that around 8:30 p.m., confinement officers found Minnix unconscious and unresponsive in his cell. They immediately entered and began performing life-saving measures until Whitley County EMS arrived nearly five minutes later.
Minnix was pronounced dead at the scene after medics attempted for 25 minutes to save his life.
The Whitley County Sheriff Department requested that a detective and a crime scene investigator from the Indiana State Police conduct the subsequent investigation.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday to help determine the cause and manner of Minnix's death.
