(GREENSBURG) - The mother of a man who died at a southeastern Indiana jail is suing the county’s sheriff and jail staff, accusing them of “callousness or reckless indifference” in his death.
Attorneys for Lynn Brewsaugh of Greensburg filed the wrongful death lawsuit Friday in federal court in Indianapolis over the March 17 death of 38-year-old M. Shane Satterfield .
The Greensburg Daily News reports a coroner found Satterfield died at the Decatur County Jail in Greensburg of natural causes from complications of alcohol withdrawal. He was serving a 14-day drunken driving sentence.
Brewsbaugh's suit alleges jail staff didn't properly react to Satterfield's deteriorating condition and placed him on a 30-minute medical watch but allowed hours to pass between those checks.
Brewsaugh says the jail staffers' treatment of her son was disgraceful.
