(MOORESVILLE) - A body found off the coast of Guam has been identified as a missing U.S. Airman from Mooresville.
The Air Force says 23-year-old Alec Dye was last seen early Monday near Tarague Beach on the north side of the island. Dye deployed to Andersen Air Force Base this past year from the 2nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Barksdale Air Force Base, La.
Family members were informed that remains found Wednesday were those of the missing airman. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Dye will receive a military funeral and will be laid to rest at West Newton Cemetery in Camby. Funeral arrangements are still being made.
Decatur Central High School dedicated Friday's basketball game to Alec Dye. Festivities include a "Gold Out" theme, with spectators wearing gold apparel to the game. Teams will wear gold stripes with the number 15 and the #15 jersey will not be worn during the game to honor Dye. Sales of $10 "Dye Dedication" t-shirts and a raffle will help benefit Dye's family.
A call for help was requested at Andersen Air Force Base security early Monday morning, and a search and rescue effort was mobilized. The Coast Guard is using a boat, jet skis, rescue swimmers and helicopters to search for Dye.
Dye is a 2009 graduate of Decatur Central High School where he played on the 2009 basketball team, who went 17-2 that year. Dye went on to attend the University of Indianapolis in 2009-2010, where he also played basketball.
