(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana native Dr. Kent Brantly and the other Ebola fighters have been named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year.
Dr. Brantly is featured on one of five magazine covers that hit news stands on Friday. The magazine says the Ebola fighters were chosen for the honor because they "risked and persisted, sacrificed and saved."
Matt Lauer spoke with Dr. Brantly Wednesday morning on The TODAY Show.
"This is not simply a historic event that we are looking on, but it's still happening right now. Ebola fighters are not just people who did something brave and courageous. They are still in the trenches fighting that war as we speak," said Brantly.
He added, "This is a huge honor its an incredible honor to be part of the group that's being recognized as Time's Person of the Year. And I think it's fitting that we acknowledge that most Ebola fighters and those that paid the highest price for their service, are themselves West Africans and it's an honor for me to be considered as a part of that group."
Brantly pointed out that the battle is far from over.
"It's a very challenging situation but there is no choice but to continue to fight. It is a battle for life and death. You can't give up."
He also drew attention to the teamwork behind the response. "The people at Emory and Nebraska and Dallas and Maryland, they're all part of this group."
