(UNDATED) - INDOT will experiment this winter with new snowplows redesigned to clear two lanes of highway at once.
Instead of a plow blade on the front of the truck, the new "tow plow" has an underbody blade to clear the truck's path, and a trailer hauling a double-wide blade that sweeps the lane on the plow's right.
INDOT has had one tow plow in Fort Wayne for six years. It'll deploy six more this year, on I-74 from Indy to Greensburg, U.S. 31 near Kokomo, U.S. 24 and State Road 25 near Logansport, and the Muncie Bypass.
Spokesman Will Wingfield says the department selected less-traveled multi-lane highways, to avoid blocking traffic on the state's busiest roads.
The department is warning motorists not to try to pass the plows -- any space next to them is where they'll push the snow.
