(INDIANAPOLIS) - A stolen car Friday night on the east side caused some anxious moments for a family and IMPD officers.
Officers were dispatched to a Speedway Gas Station at 10th Street and Sherman Drive just before 8 p.m. for a stolen car with a child in the back seat. The mother of a 5-year-old boy left her car running with the boy inside while she ran inside the business, but forgot to lock the car before going inside.
26-year-old Mitchell Tarver, allegedly jumped into the drivers seat and fled the lot. A description of the vehicle was given and an officer located the vehicle -- but not Tarver or the 5-year-old boy. Tarver was found a short time later with the boy at the Rural Inn in the 2700 block of East Michigan Street and was taken into custody.
Police already had the street closed looking for the boy and stolen car. When they got the 911 call about the boy at Rural Inn, officers raced the mother there. The boys who saw his mother fled into her arms.
Tarver allegedly had the keys of the car in his pocket and admitted to taking the car and dropping it off when he realized the child was in the back seat.
Police used the incident to remind residents not to leave your car idling unattended, especially with kids alone.
The prosecutor has yet to determine if the mother will face any charges.
