(LAFAYETTE) - Pet owners in Tippecanoe County may be forced to spay and neuter their cats and dogs under a proposed ordinance.
It would apply to all pets before the age of nine months old. According to the Journal & Courier in Lafayette, violators who do not agree to spay/neuter or microchip their pet would be fined $250. Anyone who agrees to sterilize the pet, but does not follow through, could be fined $2,500.
Under the initial proposal, exemptions would be made for residents who obtain a free breeding permit.
The ordinance will need a second reading, scheduled for December 15.
