(CONNERSVILLE) - Connersville Police have a new plan to fight heroin use, overdoses and deaths in their community, and now they say several arrests prove that it is working.
The task force is now using a former Indiana State Police post for its headquarters. They've made some progress: 24 arrests in just the last month. The ages range from 19-46. But also in November, three people died from overdoses, so they are well aware, there's a lot of work left to do.
The charges range from possession of various drugs, including methamphetamine, marijuana and hypodermic needles, to dealing in cocaine or narcotics; probation violations; trafficking with an inmate and maintaining a common nuisance.
The House of Ruth is Connersville's success story. A sacred place, it's home to a 12- to 18-month program where former drug users go to look forward.
Sharon Cranfill opened the home almost five years ago. She's now on Connersville's task force to clear heroin from her town.
So while police celebrated the two-dozen drug-related arrests since their task force started, they also said the problem doesn't end with prison.
The House of Ruth is also making progress. They've purchased the home next door so they can help even more women. They are also working to bring a detox center to Connersville.
