(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis police responded to the northern edge of Eagle Creek Park in the 8200 block of Wilson Road at 4:30 p.m. Sunday after a call reporting a hiker had found a newborn baby.
When officers arrived, they found a female infant near a parking lot. The infant was pronounced dead by EMS on the scene.
The hiking trail where the infant was found is on the far north end of the Eagle Creek Park, near Trader's Lane and Lafayette Road. The closest park entrance is at 71st Street.
The hiker found the baby girl wrapped in the sweatshirt in the photo with a distinctive logo from Vincennes University's Aviation Maintenance program, which is based in Indianapolis.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators scoured the scene for evidence.
But the more important clues in this case may come from the public. Police say the baby may have been born just a day ago.
Anyone with information about a woman who was pregnant and suddenly is inexplicably not, would be helpful. And then there is the sweatshirt that could provide investigators with valuable answers.
Police ask that anyone with information call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.
Finally, police want to emphasize the importance of Indiana's Safe Haven Law. It allows anyone to give up an unwanted infant, less than 30 days old, anonymously without fear of getting in any trouble. You can take that baby to any hospital emergency room, fire station or police station in Indiana.
