Plans Revealed For Bicentennial Torch Relay

Last updated on Friday, December 12, 2014

(UNDATED) - Governor Pence has revealed more details of a six-week torch relay leading up to Indiana’s bicentennial in 2016.

The torch relay will begin at Indiana's Old State Capitol in Corydon in September 2016. The planned route hugs the Kentucky and Illinois borders to Vincennes before turning east for a zigzag path through all 92 counties, with stops at historic sites from Abraham Lincoln's boyhood home in Spencer County to Larry Bird's old basketball stomping grounds in French Lick.

The planned route sweeps south of Indianapolis through Morgan, Johnson and Shelby Counties, including a detour to Camp Atterbury near Edinburgh, before wandering north for the second half of the 2,300-mile relay.

The final stretch will bring the torch from Carmel to Anderson to Greenfield to the statehouse for a celebration in October 2016, two months before the state's 200th birthday.

The torch will be on the move six days a week, averaging 72 miles a day and taking Mondays off.

Local coordinators will begin accepting nominations for torchbearers in March.
