(SOUTH BEND) - Police in northern Indiana say a man trying to flee officers spent 30 minutes in a lake on the campus of the University of Notre Dame before being apprehended.
Police say they began pursuing the man, identified as Joshua Ringle, 23, in Mishawaka, just east of South Bend, on Monday after he allegedly violated a protective order.
Mishawaka police told the South Bend Tribune that during the chase he broke into a home and stole a vehicle before running away on campus.
Police say he tried to escape by swimming in St. Mary's Lake and kept officers away by threatening to shoot. Police used a boat to capture him. Police say no gun was found.
Mishawaka police Lt. Tim Williams says the man was taken to a hospital to be treated for hypothermia.
