Royal Couple Arrives In New York

Last updated on Monday, December 8, 2014

(NEW YORK) - The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived to adoring fans Sunday night in New York. They’ll be staying at the Carlyle Hotel on the upper east side, but today, they attended separate events.

Prince William will meet with President Barack Obama in Washington, DC and Vice President Joe Biden about endangered wildlife and poaching. The duchess, who is pregnant with the couple's second child, will be spending time with children in Harlem. They will reunite later this evening in for a Brooklyn Nets game.

It's a trip likely to remind many of a visit Charles and Diana made three decades ago. The posh upper east side hotel where William and Kate are staying is a long-time favorite of William's mother, Princess Diana.

Hundreds of fans packed sidewalks outside the hotel, hoping for a glimpse of the young royals.

No private jet for Will and Kate. They flew commercial, on British Airways. The couple's 17-month-old son, Prince George, didn't make the trip.

Despite Kate being four months pregnant with her second child, this won't be a leisurely holiday for the royals.

"I think it's meant to be quite cutting edge, quite glamorous, it's them as a couple, them pressing the flesh, trying to raise money for their foundation and I don't think a toddler fits in with that plan," said Camilla Tominey, royal expert.

Royal watchers say the trip is a chance for the couple to forge deeper diplomatic ties between the United States and the crown, and push social causes they hold dear.

Yet to be seen: whether Will and Kate have any spontaneous interactions with New Yorkers.

The duke and duchess finish their visit on Tuesday. They'll visit the 9/11 Museum and memorial, go to the top of the Empire State Building, and attend a star-studded fundraiser for the school where they first met.
