(UNDATED) - So far this winter, INDOT is salting less and enjoying it more.
Last winter's combination of record or near-record snowfall and persistent frigid temperatures meant INDOT used 50-percent more salt on the roadways than in a typical winter. That's resulted in a corresponding price markup of 57-percent as the state gets ready for this winter, because suppliers' inventory is still depleted.
INDOT spokesman Will Wingfield says the state plans its salt purchases based on a five-year average.
So far, INDOT is benefiting from a relatively mild December -- the state has used less than 10-percent of its salt stockpile. The state will buy more salt if needed or if prices drop.
