(UNDATED) - The Indiana Health Department is reporting an increase in a bacterial disease that can cause abdominal cramping, fever, vomiting and diarrhea.
The Health Department reports more than 1,000 cases of shigellosis have been reported in Indiana this year, compared to about 100 cases the same time last year.
State Health Commissioner Jerome Adams says there's been a strong association with younger children. The bacteria can be transferred easily among children because of their poor hand washing habits and tendency to put things in their mouths. People can also become infected by consuming food or drinks prepared by an infected person or cleaning up feces.
Severe infections may require antibiotics. Health officials recommend people who display symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea see a health care provider.
