(MARION) - Two people were found dead in a home in the 1800 block of West 9th Street in Marion Saturday morning after firefighters were dispatched for a residence fire.
Family members have identified the victims as 61-year-old Robin Lyons and 55-year-old Melody Teegarden. Five dogs also died in the fire this morning.
Firefighters were called to the house around 9 a.m. after someone saw smoke coming from the home. When the fire department arrived, they couldn't get in the front door because furniture was blocking it.
A family member of the victims confirms long-time couple Melody Teegarden and Robin Lyons along with their five dogs died in the fire. When fire crews did get inside, they found the couple - but no smoke detectors.
"Smoke detectors. That's big. Could've possibly saved them. So it's a great alert system. Get them. Check them once a year," said Assistant Fire Chief Jason Hale.
"She was happy go lucky just a few days ago," Teegarden's son told Eyewitness News. He didn't want his face on camera or his name mentioned, as he was still in shock over the death of his mom.
"She was a great loving person. She'd give you the shirt off her back. She'd go the extra mile for you," he said.
Her son said it appeared that Lyons was trying to escape. "She was found in the bedroom and he was trying to get out of the back door but got tangled up in some stuff and didn't make it."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The state fire marshal visited the fire scene Saturday.
