(LAWRENCEBURG) - Lawrenceburg law enforcement officials are looking for leads into who vandalized the grave of one of their fallen police officers.
The wife of Lawrenceburg officer Detective Sgt. Thomas Cochran filed a report with the Dearborn County Sheriff's Office Saturday after the word "PIG" was found spray painted in yellow on his headstone.
The crime that took place in River View Cemetery in Aurora where the officer was laid to rest was discovered at 10:49 a.m., according to the sheriff's office report.
"To do it to a man who gave everything to a community and literally gave his life for his community. It's unbelievable," his widow, Jo'nee Cochran, told WCPO reporter Zac Pitts. "My heart hurts all over again."
Thomas Cochran died Jan. 26, 2005, one day after his patrol car slid on an icy patch of State Road 48 and hit a concrete wall while responding to an emergency call.
The veteran officer of 35 years left behind his wife, three daughters, two sons and four grandchildren.
At the time of his funeral, more than 1,000 people turned out for Thomas Cochran's visitation at Lawrenceburg High School. Police cruisers and more than 300 other cars lined up for miles in a funeral procession along US 50 from Lawrenceburg to River View Cemetery for his burial.
