(INDIANAPOLIS) - An 87-year-old woman is dead after a house fire in northeast Indianapolis, Wednesday.
Firefighters arrived after neighbors say they say heavy smoke and flames coming from the single-story residence near 35th Street and Emerson Avenue. Ruth Macklin was rescued from the burning home, but suffered a heart attack outside.
Indianapolis Fire Department Captain Rita Reith says crews performed CPR on the woman at the scene. She was taken to an Indianapolis hospital, where she later died.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The below-zero temperatures caused water to freeze to the firefighters' clothing and equipment and made the conditions around the home slick for firefighters.
