(COLUMBUS) - Two children were rescued from a car fire Monday afternoon in Columbus.
Columbus Fire Department Spokesman, Capt. Mike Wilson, says firefighters responded to a reported residential structure fire in the 700 block of Maple St. at 1:18 p.m. Firefighters were dispatched to 705 Maple St., to a reported house fire with a child reported inside the home. As they arrived, they learned that the fire was coming from a parked vehicle next to a home.
Capt. Wilson stated that 25-year-old Steven Burton, of Edinburgh, told investigators that he had just placed his 4-year-old son and nine-month-old daughter in the car and went back inside the apartment. An occupant inside the apartment reportedly alerted him to the fire. Burton stated that he and the children's mother, Amanda Weddell, were able to rescue the children.
CFD investigators said the cause of the fire, which was contained to the engine compartment, is unknown. No injuries were reported at the scene.
The vehicle was a total loss. Damage to the home is estimated at $1,500.
